Um yeah actually I got it because of my first job out here which was Pearl Harbor, uh lots of work on that, and it was a wonderful feeling because I had only been out here a couple months and it just kind of confirmed that I made the right choice. Everyone told me I was out of my mind for not going to college and doing the normal plan without a backup plan, and I didn’t need a backup plan because I have my SAG card.

Well I knew nothing of the term to begin with when I met Kim, I asked her if they could do that. And she said yeah they can do that and they are doing it and they will be doing it. And I never, I didn’t have any friends who were stationed in Iraq. You know now I have as a result of working on the film I know some guys who have come back but that’s why we’re here, trying to get their voice out there.

Yes, I do. My first film I completed when I was 16. And you know that was a dream come true for me and I kinda fell into it so getting my SAG card was kinda the, you know that was like pinching myself, it was like yeah, you’re in a movie, you know so I definitely do remember that moment.

Okay, I, Taryn was there, I didn’t get to work with Mike Myers, because even though we were costars, some cat named Guru Pitka, I’m not kidding, some guy named Guru Pitka did what I think Mike was gonna do pretty much every day. I got to kick it with Mike once. Taryn threw a surprise birthday party for me while we were in Toronto, and Mike Myers showed up. I don’t know if he was busy working, he was busy working other stuff and he dropped by, or if he was in town, and on that night, he was a riot.
Taryn – He was hilarious.
You should see, I’m gonna go to myspace and I’m going to put up the picture that he took, that I took of him talking to Vern Troyer, you know mini-me Vern Troyer, I guarantee if you don’t bust up laughing with Mike’s facial expressions, like Vern’s just talking and smiling and Mike’s just like.
Taryn – It’s, it’s ?

Yes, I remember when I got my first SAG card, I was in a rap group called The College Boys and we had performed a song called victim of the ghetto on Arsenio Hall, but before we could get on Arsenio Hall we found out that we needed to get our SAG cards so we all had to go down to the PLA [Project Labor Agreement], did the performance and boom had our SAG card immediately after. As a rapper, it meant nothing to me, I think I threw it away. That’s the truth.

Um it was beyond, I mean it wasn’t beyond my, sorry, I posted a video on YouTube, got myself and myspace, got myself in a little bit of trouble, and I apologize about that, I don’t think I’ll be back for season 4, but I do love you and thank you for all the dope you know messages that you give me on myspace. Thanks.

Well what was amazing was this film is so authentic because we took real life photos of guys who were wounded, young men and women who were wounded and we just matched that with my character. (talks) Yeah and it was really intense to meet those guys because at first I thought they were gonna be really angry, but in reality if those guys if they had the chance, they would’ve gone back, especially that they were wounded so what I took is I took that positive and optimistic outlook that they had and I brought it to the movie.

Yeah I remember, it’s so funny that you ask that question. I got it in 03 and it’s 08. And it was important, I think it was amazing because I was finally in the union, I could never picture myself in a union. This is the DGA too right? Yeah yeah yeah.

We were constantly hanging out with soldiers before doing the movie, while doing the movie, and after doing the movie. I hung out with a couple of guys we trained with the night before last. (talks) And that was everything, soaking up who they were, trying to portray them in a respectful and accurate way, that was the entire process for me.

Hahaha, no, sorry, I was six years old when I got my SAG card. It was 1987. I’ve had my SAG card for over 20 years now, yeah it meant I got to do more work, which is fun it’s always been my favorite thing to do.

Well they did, they put us with 5 other soldiers while we went through a boot camp, and uh they were really open to us and telling us stories and those sorts of things and the main thing I took away from that was the whole notion of brotherhood which is the central theme of this film and the way these guys bond and the way they uh you know uh they become a part of each other’s lives almost more in a way than family and I think that’s the thing that kinda…

I do, vaguely, it was a long time ago for me it feels like um, but I know it was a huge milestone, it was something I couldn’t wait to have happen.

Uh we we, Ryan always felt like it was really necessary, we all did, to you know hang out as much as possible, any time we had off we were always together, always, even he had the family up and stuff, and he was, we weren’t there when they were, because he likes to separate that and I think it’s more um but you know so he had us out he had a place on the lake and we all just went through a 6 day boot camp, and that was us learning each other as soldiers, and then we had immediately after that this time together, just 2 days at a lake that we just sort of got to really get to know each other as people.

Sure I mean I was in New York for 9/11 so when the towers fell and America declared war I was devastated and I wanted to make a movie about the soldiers, and then when my little brother enlisted to fight in Iraq it certainly had a profound effect on the rest of you know my life and it was a thing that was part of researching the movie. It’s like you know I was talking to my little brother when he was over there, talking to my mother who was being really devastated by the whole event, you know not knowing if her first son was dead or alive, not knowing if he was injured, and she just you know she made it through which was really tough, and I was interviewing soldiers all over America, and then we had a number of vets work on the movie, which I’m really fortunate to have and a lot of them are here, and so it’s been really great being able to tell their story.

We gotta make it feel like real soldiers and you gotta be in perfect shape. And he’s like okay, okay, don’t worry about it right. So he’s workin out, workin out, workin out and he shows up on set right? And he like he just shows me his chest, he’s like are you happy? And I was like, yeah, that’s pretty good. (talks) well the women, should I do this, he’s an actor, I mean I love him for his talent, I love him for his mind, I don’t mind him for his certainly fantastic physique, which is his cut abs, I mean he’s in great shape, I mean he did such honor to the soldiers, not only getting their attitude right and their sense of camaraderie, look the bottom line is they had to look like soldiers, and these guys, real guys had put on like 30 pounds of muscle, and they needed to, and he was always complaining, he was just like oh it’s so hard, it’s so hard (talks) no he said it’s hard, because these guys are a little bit younger than him, but he was just stellar and fantastic looking and really…
