James Whitaker 00:01
We're gonna have Christians come up they want. I mean, they wouldn't let you stand in that room without asking for lunch.

Speaker 1 Interviewer
And it worked out beautifully. I just I just like to have more than a measly week

James Whitaker 00:15
reminded us today this Boris Becker is terrific Isn't he 7th.

Speaker 1 Interviewer
Yes! I know. I know. People love to watch.

James Whitaker 00:28
He is the youngest semifinalist in the history of the game

Speaker 1 Interviewer
next Royal. what about the next royal marriage when when are we going to see that?

James Whitaker 00:34
Well I think it's not going to be too long actually. You're talking about Viscount Lindley, who is the son of Princess Margaret, who is of course divorced from the Earl of Snowden and Princess Margaret the Queen's sister, David Lindley, as he likes to be known, he's really quite informal as a royal. He' has none of the starchiness attached to the royal family, disappears right out the window with him. He rides around on a motorbike big BMW 1000 CC, which is very unregal. And he turns up at pop concerts. He was at the Bruce Springsteen one the other night and turned up with his very pretty girlfriend, girlfriend. I need to put my teeth in, sorry. Turned up with his very pretty girlfriend, Susanna Constantine, and she had a big crash helmet too and jumped on the back of the bike. Now, that is, I think going to happen. They're not even engaged yet, but I think it'll happen fairly soon. And I mean, it's a good thing, again, run out of the royal family. I mean, 150 years ago, the son of the sister of the Queen of England would have married a member of europe's royal family, very often.. They do actually fall in love. They're not just arranged marriages and they actually want to marry one another. David Lindley is what relation, he's about eighth or ninth in line of succession to the throne. So he's not baptized. He's never really going to get there at all. And it's nice to marry for love

Speaker 1 02:09
Certainly, what about good old Prince Andrew, he is getting older. And getting better.

James Whitaker 02:17
Yes what. is he, 24 now? Well, he's tied up. Randy Andy is known in Canada and actually his nickname started in Canada. Now well caught on here, he has he's continually getting getting involved with totally unsuitable, pretty actresses and well, soft porn actresses. Koo Stark of course, was very racy. ?, he likes them leggy and quite indiscreet. He's calmed down a lot. I think the queen is desperate for him to stay in the Navy for some time, because they keep sending him away to the South Atlantic, which is where he's based in the Falklands for about five months until mid June, keeps him out of harm's way. He is a good looking fellow.

Speaker 1 Interviewer
Should I apply?

James Whitaker 03:12
Certainly, you have all the credentials on the looks front. But why not? Does that turn you on?

Speaker 1 03:18
Well, the thing is, one would wonder that would be stupid, wouldn't it? I mean, it would be silly even to think about

James Whitaker 03:24
Not at all. In fact, you're a great deal more suitable to go out with him than some of the girls he's been seen around with lately. Certainly improve Anglo American relationships even further.

Speaker 1 Interviewer
Is there a form I fill out? He's only 24, a younger man
01:03:46 226.94 thumbnail
James Whitaker
That's all right you can call him your toy boy.

Interviewer
A boy toy. Tell us about Prince Edward, what's he up to these days

James Whitaker 03:53
Young, he's just 21. He's just finishing, well he's got another year at university at Cambridge. He caused an uproar when he got accepted by Cambridge University, Jesus College, because he got in with some of the lowest grades ever known in the history of education in this country.

Interviewer
That's not very nice.

Whittaker
Well I'm afraid it's true. He got in with, I think it was ah two Ds and an E grade, which is I mean really dreadful. It wouldn't qualify him for even a bad university let alone in one like Cambridge But they justified this Jesus College by saying we will accept any students who are going to be a benefit to this university and this college in particular, and I must admit that the son of the Queen is certainly beneficial to have in your college. So he got in and he's done quite well. He joins and he's a great thespian. He loves acting. He's been involved in various plays, which is organized and not only acted in but as director. And again, I think with only a modicum of talent everybody sits there and raves about him because of who he is. I don't think he really is that talented, but he's made a big effort. He's doing a course in the Royal Marines, which is actually quite tough, and he's doing quite well at it. He's actually very shy, one had the feeling for a long time that he was incredibly arrogant. Well they're all fairly arrogant in the royal family but even more arrogant than usual. But in fact, I told think that was very fair, I think it's because he was very shy and got to get embarrassed at certain things .

Interviewer
Would he ever be allowed to act?

James Whitaker
Oh yeah when he does I think he would actually I think that's one of the few things he could do because it's totally non controversial. It's non political, which the royal family can't get involved in politics in any way. Or the controversy. I haven't actually given it much thought but I think acting is one of the very few things he could in fact do but I just don't think he has the talent, that is the big drawback.

Speaker 1 06:06
That would be be different though. Because it seems that the Royals as you call them, don't do a lot except go around and like you said well benefit you know, help with benefits that sort of thing

James Whitaker 06:17
Well I mean, this would benefit people seeing him on stage and as I say, it's avery non controversial thing. I'd stop beyond the realms of possibility but I don't think it'll happen again. The armed services only may even become a Royal Marine actually.
01:06:32 392.74 thumbnail
Speaker 1 06:33
is everybody's favorite still the Queen Mother or is Diana taking over?

James Whitaker 06:39
No, well they're different, no I think people I mean the Queen Mother is adored, and rightly so. She's 85 on Ausgut 4. She is as spikey as they come. There was another situation. That is why people adore her. Her car got caught up in a big traffic jam in the middle of London the other day, there had been a bomb scare somewhere, traffic had come to a complete halt. She was really some considerable way from her home at Clarence House. I'd say she was a mile and a half away. And instead of sitting in the car, she got out of her car with her detective, it's very laid back. There's no over security with her. There is security, but it's quite gently, which is the way she likes it. And with her lady in waiting, who I think did then nearly kill, she then walked back to Clarence house, I mean, and it's that sort of thing that makes her absolutely adored. She's always got a kindly word for everybody the photographers worship her. When she arrives somewhere, and there's an active cameraman in front of her, she will begin there with her way and she'll walk round till she's got closer. Everybody's got that picture. And she says good morning, which is not always the case of members of the royal family. They active feuding with the press and more or less ignore them. She never does that. She says Hello, good morning and to one or two of her favorites she'll say, How are you today? Yes, she is adored.

Speaker 1 Interviewer
Is it that arrogance that makes the press occasionally lash out sort of snarling, if you will.

James Whitaker 08:18
I think that quite often there is anger towards them. The royal family because of their position. And I mean, a lot of my friends say well, they are purely an act of birth, that they have all this power. And a lot of people do resent that maybe they don't do enough work. Maybe they don't care enough, maybe they don't have enough understanding of people. There's a mixture of jealousy there and lack of understanding. A lot of journalists are never quite left wing and are anti establishment which can be quite healthy. It can get unhealthy at times. I personally am very proud of the royal family. I think they do a very good job. I think there are times when some of them particularly the Prince of Wales, could in fact do more work. But quite a lot of it's stems to jealousy.

Interviewer
The two babies, everyone thinks

James Whitaker
Oh well, they're babies. And Prince William's very lively. I mean, people love the business when they heard that he was throwing shoes down the lavatory and pulling the chain and uh he's a very bright, attractive child hyperactive. The general rule with the royal family and young children is that they don't take them out to even semi public engagements like to church or to ? until they reach the age of three. I think it's gonna be a bit longer than that, before Prince William does, because he darts here, there and everywhere. And although he's got a nanny, in fact has two nannies looking after him, he is quite undisciplined at times in a very charming way but the royal family don't need in the middle of a church service Prince William getting up and going to try and pull the hassock or the tail of one of the priests or something, so, but he's a very nice child. He's a good looking child, too. How about the baby baby? Well, we've hardly seen Harry. Actually its Henry was born Prince Henry that Charles and Diana said they wanted him called Harry. We will, I think, gonna see some pictures of him again in maybe September . Yeah, may choose when they should be afraid to go. I mean, the other day I was up in Scotland when they were going up to Balmoral. That's the royal families Castle in Scotland, and they were having a weekend break up there and Harry appeared and he looks very nice child. Of course, everybody jumps on those pictures. You see, this is where the royal family are so clever. They do not let any of those children become overexposed. And if you keep them away from Fleet Street and away from the people, they are fighting to get pictures of them. And then when they do get even, maybe just to snap a picture and they love it and they put it in the paper bag, and it's the air of mystique that we're all family extremely clever at putting about themselves. I mean, they also unlike Americans and presidents and presidents, right, because they're not running for office at any stage. They've got it for life they don't need to win a vote

Interviewer
so true.

Whitaker
Yea. Makes a difference.
01:11:44 704.59 thumbnail
Speaker 1 11:43
Do, we are we done? All right, one more quickie about the fascination the English with their royal life

James Whitaker 11:50
Why do you keep saying English? The Americans are evan more fanatical about our royal family.

Interviewer
We are?

Whitaker
Of course? if you could trade the back into the state, you would be delighted. You wait till the Prince and Princess of Wales come to America in November and then go down to Florida and less than a place in parallel. You see then they arrange his engagements around them?

Interviewer
Do you think he's henpecked?

James Whitaker 12:21
Yeah, but I think he quite likes it. I think he's a wimp, but I think he likes being a wimp with her. Yeah. I think it serves them both fine.

Interviewer
What gives you the idea that he's a wimp

James Whitaker 12:32
Well, I mean, I think you just have to watch him and you know, he that he stopped eating all meat and he's given up shooting. And he jumps to it when she says something and you can say he adores her, and that's very nice, but I think she wears the trousers in that family.
01:12:50 770.36 thumbnail
Interviewer
Very interesting.

Speaker 2 Whitaker
The ittle girl who made good, didn't she.

Interviewer
She did. From Sloane Ranger

James Whitaker 12:58
Yea was never really Sloane Ranger. She was actually, Sloane Ranger is just sort of upper middle class and syndrome. She was always very upper upper class and I think she was slightly above or slightly Sloane Rangers but rather superior of that.

Speaker 1 Interviewer
but accessible and a fairly normal person.

James Whitaker 13:20
Well not really. No members of our royal family are normal. I mean, they don't know what life's all about. They have no idea of how normal people carry on.

Speaker 2 Interviewer
She did before she got married.

James Whitaker 13:33
Vaguely but I mean, you visit her family home, Althorp. I mean it is really rather superior to Sandringham, which is the Queen's home. I mean, there's nothing normal about her family. They're very rich, they're very grand and very old established the family goes back. I mean at the time of the engagement it was worked out that she was in fact more royal than Charles in some ways. She goes way back into James II the Stuart King. The family comes from that. They're not normal in the normal sense. I promise you.

Speaker 1 14:09
All that and beauty too.

James Whitaker 14:13
Yeah, good combination. Isn't it?

Interviewer
seems so, very interesting.

James Whitaker 14:18
She could give Margo Hemingway a run for her money I think
01:14:19 859 thumbnail
Speaker 1 Interviewer
I think you're right there. Now the only other thing that I need to know about Diana is why everyone I suppose is because they don't have anything else to talk about, except when you get a little like you did, yes a vignette is the what she's wearing that day.

James Whitaker 14:34
Very important what she's wearing. She is the greatest ambassador that British Fashion has. And I think I feel slightly sorry for her that she really can only dress in British fashion to a sad rather ridiculously by Buckingham Palace. She can't wear what she wants. That's nonsense. She can only wear English. I would love to see her dressed by the Italian fashion houses, um Valentino, Gianni Versace, oh dream. She does look good. She does have a genuine models figure.

Interviewer
Not anorexic.

James Whitaker 15:12
No,

Interviewer
That's been said too.

Whitaker
No no and I wrote that story too about anorexia. The story was and was true, and has subsequently been confirmed by the Queen's press secretary Michael Shea. There was great cause for concern about the amount of weight she lost. This is going back about three years. She is very thin. She's not anorexic. But um the though she has to watch herself all the time. I mean, let's face it, she's about five foot nine and three quarters, five foot 10. And she doesn't weigh too much. I'm trying to work it out in pounds in a big hurry. I should think she weighs about 110 111 pounds. Now that's pretty light for someone who's nearly five foot 10 But she is a terrific looking girl. And I think the Princess of Wales though traditionally, you're talking about the Prince of Wales, which to me is the most glamorous female title in the world. They should look, a Princess of Wales should look terrific. Great. She does really good.
01:16:18 978.73 thumbnail
Speaker 1 Interviewer
Is England proud of her? Is she everything they want?

James Whitaker 16:24
Yes, I think so. And so Scotland and Wales, and Northern Ireland. Very proud of her. Yes. No, I think we're pretty happy that she's the wife of the Prince of Wales.

Interviewer
So do you watch picking her apart? Are you careful?

James Whitaker 16:40
every now and again, we just have to slap her on the wrist and just keep her in some sort of shape. Keeps her on her toes.

Interviewer
all right, all right, that's great. Thank you Yeah.

Interview about Royal Family ends.
01:16:54 1014 thumbnail
Whitaker and Interviewer seen walking together down the streets of London.

James Whitaker 17:17
But I did feel offended that you haven't called me just to say look, I'm coming to London. I'd like to see, but I'm gonna call from from the CLI say there's a San Francisco station. I said who is CPAC?

Speaker 2 17:30
Yeah, that's the problem. Actually I didn't know what the weather would be like so I didn't know what

Interviewer
All right, you talk and I'll talk ready Stan? How do you get your stories? What do you do
01:18:05 1084.99 thumbnail
Interviewer
Did you go up to her and ask her if she sacked anybody lately? Is that really what happened? How is it decided how that article will appear with the picture and the certain headline?

Cameraman
Do it one more time here?

Take Two - Interviewer
How do you decide which sensational headline you're going to use and how the article is going to be laid out?
Why do you think she picked you?
POW?
What is it Princess of Wales, Diana Princess Princess of Wales. Diana. What is it?
What do hey call her? Princess Diana of Wales. Diana Prince. What is it exactly?
