The Prestige is three parts magic trick the pledge I’m going to cut a woman in half, the term cutting a woman in half and the prestige which is the woman coming back together. In our movie the prestige is in the movie itself, the greatest magic trick is performed by the director and the script, there is a twist in the movie no ones going to get.

He’s a great writer and he’s a great director and what makes him a great director is he knows exactly whats going wrong if anything is and he knows exactly how to tell you how to get it right and he says it quietly, the better the director the quieter he is. Oh he’s great but I was already a big fan of his, I’d never met him but I saw him on The Boy From Oz on stage which in mind I’ve seen a lot of theatres one of the greatest theatre performances I’d ever seen. If you get a chance to see it it’s brilliant.

Yeah really the narrative of the film is based on the principles the way a magic trick comes across an audience, we wanted to do that to create a sense of magic rather then impress stage tricks through a camera I don’t think that would have made much of an impact because you know camera tricks and CG and everything. So really yeah the whole film is sort of playing it the whole way through.

I was really looking for two guys who could really convey the idea and Christian’s I think is a superior magician, a natural magician but he’s not the worlds best showman, he cant really sell the trick to the audience where as Hugh’s character he may not be the greatest magician but boy can he sell cause Hugh has this showmanship I’ve never seen before he comes alive on stage, he can control an audience and picks up on that energy and feeds on the energy and that was essential for the part.

Well the fact is, what I mean when I say that is its not as if there’s tones of them out there anyway, its not as if you look at every movie that comes out in a year and there are an awful lot of really special unique movies you know. They just aren’t out there for anyone, I didn’t mean that I was missing out on it I was being just being naive before to think that there was going to be kind of a great light at the end of the tunnel and that they all would. They do not come out all that often so when The Prestige does, when something as good as this does, when its as special as this then you know you just jump on to it and obviously I had a good prior working relationship with Chris. I think he’s one of the finest filmmakers out there and he’s pulled off a fantastic magic trick in this movie.

I mean Hugh is one of the best guys around, I think in the movie business he’s very easy going guy, great guy to get along with and there was no need to waste any energy on actually having a rivalry off the set but I tell you what he’s an annoying man he’s an annoying man because he’s so bloody good at what he does, he’s a good actor, he’s a good singer, great dancer he’s got this great stage presence its kind of like there’s nothing this guy couldn’t do, he’s a great all rounder. And I aint really that.
