Film Independent produces the Spirit Awards and just at this last nominations we nominated Robert Altman’s Prairie Home Companion, in honor of Robert Altman and it is so great to see Meryl Streep work with Independent Films and see her work with great studio films like Devil Wears Prada and she’s been an independent voice in addition to being an extraordinary talent, her whole career. I’m a big fan. |

Yes, I think in a lot of ways because what she has done is she really has kept family in perspective while she did it. She is a really accomplished person but yet she always…she took time off to be with her kids. She found a way to balance it. It is very important to me because I have a seven year old daughter so to see someone with great success who is trying to balance it is so important because I think you can have both. (talk) Because a lot of people say you have to have one or the other but I don’t believe that. I believe you can be a great mother and a great executive at the same time. On the way here, I was thinking what I accomplished this morning. I fed the dog, I made the oatmeal and I got here and I’m put together and I think that is an accomplishment. |

I think you look at Cate Blanchett who is in my opinion the future Meryl Streep of our generation and you see…you look at her work and it is so diverse and so intricate and so interesting to watch her always. No matter what she is doing. She is not only an actress that can do drama, she can do comedy and it is so amazing to watch her that you really get a sense of how unlimited to be as an actor. |

Now we have to turn women away because the ballroom can’t accomidate everybody. So I view it as a celebration and I view it as a support network where women are really joyous for each other and whether you are on the list or not on the list, it really doesn’t make any difference, you are making a huge contribution. |

I have tremendous words of encouragement, it is a phenomenal business and I guess what I would suggest to them that they concentrate on the work. Concentrate on the movie they are making, the television show they are making and don’t worry about anything else. Have almost tunnel vision and have really good quality work and if you do that the results will come in your career. But try to get all that other stuff out of the way. |

In all ways. I think Meryl is probably the iconic figure for actors and actress. I don’t think it is a sexist thing. I think there is nobody that does it better, you know, in terms of acting. But equally as important that she has managed to juggle her life and make choices. She is not afraid to speak out in social causes she believes in and she has been happily married to the same man and has a family so she has done it all and she has done it all extraordinarily well. I actually idolize her so it is a real thrill for me to give her this award. We go back a very long way. We both started with a movie called Kramer Vs. Kramer, over 25 years ago and to see the continual genius of her work is really awesome. |
