The characters, the characters um, a lot of scripts I don’t feel like they are character driven and I’m more interested in the those scripts that are, and um, just reading it, the characters all had there own idiosyncrasies and there own eccentricities, that um, made it very interesting to me, so and I like stories of hope and all of that.

Well I read the script and I was like this is fresh, this is something that is actually sincere and not glib or cynical, it’s trying to add to the world rather than comment it from it from the distance, and that’s what initially inspired me to participate and then I met the director Mark Pellington, who is also very effusive and emotional and very raw and very open, and I really think he really wanted to expose his characters and that was interesting to me, he wanted to have their vulnerabilities open and be there and have it shot in a very naturalistic way, in as much as it’s a comedy, have a real dramatic side to it as well.

Do I believe in miracles? I think everything is a miracle, I mean, if you just look at the Universe it’s crazy that we’re all here, I mean what’s not miraculous about that and when something unusual happens then I guess it sort of makes you re-examine how amazing it is that were here in the first place. So, yeah I guess so.

I mean, I get hung up on clouds, you know, I’m the kind of person that, especially as a kid, I remember spending hours, just staring at them and turning them into things.

You know it’s that old cliché of just a real good script, and then you know, Mark Pellington the director, I really liked the movies he’d made before, but mainly just a good script and maybe something that is kind of a departure for me, you know, I do a lot of comedies and I’ve done drama, but its, this was definitely something different

Shirley: We just had a tour, we were on a big vacation and took lots and lots and lots of pictures and came up with a picture that we didn’t know what it was, who it was, where it was and all of that and it turned out to be our front lawn, our tree, in the clouds, in the dark, he doesn’t remember taking it, we don’t know where it came from, it was a picture, we had no idea was there, it’s the most beautiful photograph you have ever seen, matter of fact I think it will win prizes.

Well the script was fantastic and then I met Mark Pellington and his story was so powerful over the loss of his wife and he want to get back into making films again and how much a story like this meant to him, you know, I was sick with kidney disease and I recovered fully and when I was and I remember when I got undress to get lay on the table, right before the surgery, you really at the point, you think, this is it, this is that point where you either live or you don’t live, and then, you look back and think of all the days that I wasted you could get back and relive it would be wonderful so I think, in Henry giving up and then recycling and finding out he’s ok, the movie was, uh, and the part of the priest was something, believe me if you want to change gears that’s the way to go.
