Speaker 1 Carolyn Russin
Carolynne Russin.

Speaker 2
Carolynne Russell (Carolyn responds, "Carolyn Russin")
Why do you come to discos?

Speaker 1 00:18
Because I love it. I just enjoy coming out for the night. I can't sleep nights and it's the greatest energy

Speaker 2
You like New York nightlife?

Speaker 1 Carolyn
It's the best nightlife. It keeps happening.

Speaker 2
What do you come to this goes for this place for, what are you looking for?

Speaker 1 00:36
Just have fun, don't even have to see my friends. I just get dressed up and even come alone. You just have fun, bands all night. Talk to people sometimes. And I just feel free.

Speaker 2 00:50
When you get dressed up what reasons what goes through your mind that causes you to dress the way you do?

Speaker 1 00:55 Carolyn
It's how I feel . I dress a lot of different ways. When Dracula came out, I really looked like his woman. And I put the two little dots on my neck and I was waiting for the screen doors to open. And I change all the time. I like to put it all together.
02:09:19 81.97 thumbnail
Speaker 2 01:24
You think provocative . Do you think the movements of the dancers on the floors are sexually stimulating

Speaker 1 01:38 Carolyn
Yes, I think more to to the viewers than But when I'm dancing, I'm just dancing. And I'm so into dancing I don't see anything else around me and feeling the music and changes in light. Just moving

Speaker 2 01:57
You think the dance with sexual dance movements are put on?

Speaker 1 02:01 Caroline
I think people do what they feel. I think they're moving every way that they feel out there, it's very real.

Speaker 2
Do Lights have any effect?

Speaker 1 Caroline
Yes. Especially when it's black and I'm wearing white, I look real good.

Speaker 2 02:19
Would you like to live anywhere else other than New York?

Speaker 1 02:25 Caroline
I love to live in New York and I'd like to stay here. I'd like to travel al little, but there's no place like New York. it's every night, you know.

Speaker 2 02:34
Why do you think there's more freedom to express oneself in New York than anywhere else in the world? What do you do in the daytime?

Speaker 1 Caroline
I'm a slum landlord.

Speaker 2
A Slum landlord? Meaning?

Speaker 1 Caroline
I own some slum properties. (Speaker 2: Located in Manhattan?). Yeah. Are you one of my tenants? laughs.
On the outskirts of Manhattan. Above 86th Street. the west side, lower Manhattan.

Speaker 2
What type of effort do you have to put in to your business to keep it going?

Speaker 1 Caroline
Just to collect the money and get those rent increases.

Speaker 2
Do you manage the organization?

Speaker 1 Caroline
Yes, I do. I do everything.
It's very. No, you have to be very sharp. You really have to be on top and I am out there in the day when I wake up in the afternoon. And I've really made it grow and avoiding a lot of a lot more income which is difficult today because the expenses always exceed the income.

Speaker 2
Do you have any unfulfilled fantasies?

Speaker 1 Caroline
I'd like to have all young good looking tenants. men. I've been renting to men lately like crazy and I hope they complain., Laughs. I visit right away. Lots of laughter. Yes, I have to get rid of those women out of those apartments.

Speaker 2
So what would you do open a brothel?

Speaker 1 Caroline
I want them all for myself. Yeah. So I come at night and I have all this energy I can stay up all night and just sleep a few hours late in the morning, go to work about 12 o'clock and put in a good day.
02:12:38 280.74 thumbnail
Speaker 2
You feel you have any unusual hang ups?

Speaker 1 04:45 Caroline
To wanna to have a lot of men around me. But I'm coming to believe that why be heterosexual. It's a lot a lot more difficult. I think we should just be sexual. This way I can have anyone.

Speaker 2
If I weren't so tired
You think the participators are into watching because it stimulates them to see people dancing and acting provocatively?

Speaker 1 Caroline
people come here many nights just to watch. You get dancing or sitting theyre just looking all around for something they like. It's nice to have fun. It doesn't it doesn't matter not to go home with anyone. And I usually don't and it's very upsetting. (Turns and laughs). I'm never coming back here again

Speaker 2
With all those male tenants, what do you want to take someone home for?

Speaker 1 06:03 Caroline
just just to loosen up and have fun just to come here and just let it all out. It is another kind of energy and you go home and you feel a lot better. And you can get up the next day and go to work. And it's replacing that romance. And that sex.

Speaker 2
You want to live anywhere else than New York?

Speaker 1 Caroline
I've been I've traveled a lot of places. And I always come back to New York. I could live someplace else but it's New York.
02:14:38 401.2 thumbnail
Speaker 2
I'm moving the questions around.
We were talking about fashion earlier, we talked about fashion earlier. Why do you dress the way you do basically?

Speaker 1 Caroline
Because I like it. I only dress for me. Everything I do is for me. I wear my hot pink lipstick for me. I wear my skirt slid up this way with the high heels because I like it. I wear the colors because I like it I dont car about anybody else. I don't care if my friends say don't do that. Put your hair up that way. I'm doing different I always do it the way I like and dress the way I like it.

Speaker 2
Anything you want to say?

Speaker 1 Caroline
What are you doing later? (laughs). One track. You want to get me off the track? There is actually a place I'd like to live, Kashmire, India. but it doesn't have the New York the nightlife.
it's okay. You see those places are all okay for one night or just sometimes but New York is every night. That's the difference

(for better version of audio/video use LB-39)

Speaker 2
What do women mostly talk about when they're in the Ladies Room?

Speaker 3 Ladies Room attendant (speaks with foreign accent)
Interesting people come over here and that's like it because the group you're not like a family everybody you know they help and then enjoys very much. That's you know, that

Speaker 2
Are there many types of women?

Speaker 3
Yeah, many, many.

Speaker 2
What do you do when men patronize the women's room?

Speaker 3 Ladies Room Attendant
I don't know that's what I want to know whyis the men come to here

Speaker 2
I understand there's alot of men coming in the Ladies Room

Speaker 3 08:49
But not now, not now. Yes. And during this time I scared. . No more. No. Yes, that is when you're not only me because I'm seeing the ? and spring to see this sometimes and no. leave the door open. (illegible due to thick accent)

Speaker 3
Yes i like it but i am disappointed in the weather.
02:16:04 486.67 thumbnail
Speaker 2
You don't like the weather in New York, but you like the nightlife in New York. Is there anywhere else you'd rather live now than New York?

Speaker 3 09:33
No, not really no. I'm based in many places but Denali.

Speaker 2 09:38
Why do you think all these women come in here dressed in the multitudes of fashions that they do?

Speaker 3 09:44
Well, for my opinion, is because in that place is no interest in the world. And enjoys because it's something clean. Is nothing there you know that's the right thing came for enjoys because then another play you know it's very dangerous and gotta do something different. in here and you know I tell everybody like your family

Speaker 2 - No footage blank screen

Speaker 2 11:37
For being one of the creators of New York nightlife for so many years, what do you think of the changes between the 60s and 70s, which basically was a growth period in New York?

Speaker 4 11:53
Um you know we talked about that before and I don't think anything has changed. I think we have changed. I think if we would have lived or being now in the age like 10 years younger we, when we started salvation, the observations honest. It was a totally different type of trip that, which we are going into now, right now. I think we becoming more civilized, we becoming more, people looking for more attraction, every club has to do outdo themselves in order to make it. The more money you spend, the more people are going to come. And those gimmick of keeping that people control makes you believe more had to go and they get there and just sit there like they sit at home before they leave.

Speaker 2
And Are there more changes in the New York nightlife scene in the year to come?

Speaker 4
I think there's going to be a big change. There was a club here in 67 called Cerebrium. I don't know if you remember that club. This club always had such left such an impression on me because it was so different. It was not like that whole rhythm type of thing. It was you walked in and never had like beautiful, beautiful waitresses waiting on you and you changed your clothes. And then you were sitting on different platforms and the whole atmosphere was like just peaceful, nice. Everybody's smile. And I think something like this maybe in a in a different art form. But I think that type of level I think
02:21:46 828.27 thumbnail
Blank. Audio but no visual

Speaker 2
people are more cultured, more aware.

Speaker 4 13:54
You know, I become more aware you become more aware. You know, when you come to come to this club, you stay 10 minutes, the music is bad. you go someplace else.

Speaker 2
In as far as disco is a concerned. What do you think's the next evolution?

Speaker 4 14:13
I've been talking because especially at Studio 54 I thought a lot about it. And one morning I came home on the fly. I walked home and I said what what's missing in this goddamn place? It was such a hit, incredible, could have been built out in such a dimension which they never even touched. which is a shame. The image of 54 I mean, cologne, clothing I mean, you could have done anything with this goddamn place.

Speaker 2
You could have marketed 54 across the world. Right? We definitely tried to do that in the beginning. But too fast.

Speaker 4
Especially, you know alot about it because you work here. . I mean there was, you know, when we started creating it, 54, there's marble galleries there was more money. I mean Lloyd had $9 million of tax laws he spent a million bucks on this place and this was planned and so basically in the beginning was DJs and bartenders and security. Really a work risk for us and really building, creating something. And every evening was planned on having some different type of environment and I think
I think what's happening is I think what's happening is this, that we all of us become more aware. Like I mentioned before.
we were going on we're going on into the 21st century and we want to get more excited and more excitement and I think there's one group who's gonna go that direction and then we, who went through all that crap that we would like you say okay, man, I'm tired let me buy a boat and live on an island. Take it easy. You know what i mean?
02:24:38 1000.27 thumbnail
Speaker 2
Let me ask you a question. do you think all the seductive dance movements of the dancers are stimulating?

Speaker 4 16:49
I think it was seductive movements. I really they can't dance.

Speaker 2 16:57
I mean, do you think they're sexually stimulating for to the viewers as well as the people that are dancing?

Speaker 4 17:03
I think that the beautiful lady dancing and she's got a seductive and it's a beautiful body. I get turned of course, but if its two big guys dancing, slapping each other I'm not really crazy about it you know?

Speaker 2 17:15
What about you Barbara, when you see two big handsome men dancing does it stimulate you in any way sexually to watch them?

Speaker 5 Barbara
It all depends on the person dancing.

Speaker 2
Do you think disco has any impact on fashion and the industry?. In what way

Speaker 5 Barbara
The styles of clothing, They set the styles I think.

Speaker 2
Do you think New York life is beneficial for your career. In what way

Barbara
it has, I've met some

Speaker 4
Give an example tonight Bobbie

Barbara
i met a photographer tonight. A very well known photographer tonight, we're going to do some testings next week.

Speaker 2
So New York nightlife is definitely beneficial for you.

Speaker 4
Not every night

Speaker 5 Barbara
Once in awhile. It can also harm you.
02:26:25 1107.25 thumbnail
Speaker 2 18:28
Do you think there's anywhere else in the world that has the nightlife that New York does.

Speaker 4 18:35
You know. I think Bobby is just getting into the zone to the world of modeling which is like such a fantasy world, ,you know. And I live to it for so many goddamn years and live places and I don't think if I would live in any city in the world. New York, that would be the place. I mean, it's nothing like New York. I mean, there's really nothing Paris is depressed. England is so goddamn depressed you walk in, you know

Speaker 2
Why do you think there's more opportunity to express oneself in New York than anywhere else.

Speaker 4 19:19
This is I think, what attracts everybody. I think if you have an idea then in Germany, for instance, or in Switzerland, you have to have hotel school to be trained, to have the license of opening a club restaurant or anything like here, you get the money, the idea, the people behind you, you apply for a liquor license, you open it and so there's more opportunity. Like for instance you, of course, and it's more easy.

Speaker 2 19:48
Do you think disco nightlife has replaced romance and sex.

Speaker 4
Not at all. Not for me.

Speaker 5 Barbara
looks like it's bringing it back. People are dancing, a place to go

Speaker 2. Noise in bkgd interferes
separation, this little dance. ????

Speaker 4
you know, I think that people who dance Samba, Waltz, cha cha cha and those Latin American dances which are very close, they thought same way and felt the same way than we dancing today. It always depends on your partner

Speaker 2 20:40
watching is as important as participating at a disco

Speaker 4 20:44
I find myself more and more just watching mostly because I like the music.

Speaker 2
Do you enjoy the music in a disco Barbara?

Barbara
Yes, I do.

Speaker 2
What do you like about it?

Speaker 5
the beat. Lately there's a different beat coming out too. So it sounds because the lights lights Yeah, so when it gets too dark, I don't know if the light is on that flickers on and off.

Speaker 4
What are you trying to come out with? like I'm calmer, more relaxed environment or in depth.

Speaker 2
Why do why do people come to discos? What are we here for?
