Sound Bite: Angelina Jolie – Alexander
Interviewer: Given your charity and your interests, this must have been a fascinating story to revisit at this politically charged time in our history. "It is. It was never the intention. I mean, you know, Oliver started working on this thirteen years ago, so the intention was not to match it to any of today’s politics. But certainly it didn’t, you know when we all watched it the other night, it did cross our minds that, you know, there was a time when the leader was on the battlefield, and risking his own life, and how different war was then. And different leaders at that time, and you see your enemy face to face, and you, and uh and then this also looking at Alexander as a man who conquers an area and studies their culture, and he learns about their religion, and he doesn’t change it and he respects civilizations that are older than his. And, um, ya know, he’s not perfect. He does strong bad things as well. But, there’s some things that kind of you watch the film and think, maybe we can take note of that. |

Sound Bite: Angelina Jolie – Alexander Interviewer: Historical accuracy?
"No, a lot, from what they know about her, there’s, there are historians, I’d say, “Are the snakes real?” and they say, “Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.” And they had all, they had so many different historians who had different theories on why she did that. Did she do that to keep, ya know, fill up a way, to scare him, to try and build up something that was scary around herself. Was it part of just Dionysus and her gods, and her um… But there are things that that they do know that is you know, and their relationship and them being very strongly connected, and her power over him, and, yeah…" |

Interviewer: Working with real snakes "I didn’t have a phobia, but I wasn’t as comfortable as that, and I had to get that comfortable. So I spent some, I spent days just with them, getting to know them and getting comfortable. I wasn’t afraid of them, but I wasn’t, you know, I mean, it was, it’s one thing kind of just knowing a snake and being able to touch them, but another thing, like, just doing really heavy dramatic scenes with them wrapped on your neck or your leg or, and not being distracted by them and. Or nervous around them. So to just totally relax, it took a little while. |

Interviewer: You're worried about your own part, and these (snakes) are an extra. "Yeah, which is funny, because that one, there was that one that decided to join me in my scene. And, you know. There’s one that was on my shoulder And just lifted his head up, and there’s this really weird, kind of, where I’m just talking and reciting a letter and he was just supposed to be hanging and instead he just decided he would be right here for that scene. It was really funny. It’s just standing out on the courtyard, and just if you watch, there’s just this odd hovering. Where Oliver was going, “Get the camera now, the snake’s perfect!” |

Sound Bite: Angelina Jolie - Alexander
Interviewer: Does any of it relate to today? The sexuality is not even an issue in this movie. Labels, etc. "That’s right, yeah, I mean it’s stupid to, I think it’s ridiculous, I think it’s ridiculous to see how backwards we’ve gone. How we’ve judged, we have so much judgment and so many labels for things, and so much, you know, and then you just think, what is wrong with these people? You know, he loves who he loves, he’s great. And the relationships between the men, which I think are extraordinary in this film, because, you know, what you see or what you don’t see is so much more interesting, and the deep soul connection and the brotherhood and the love and the is ah it’s just uh, it’s great. Yeah, and the actors were so, just a hundred percent committed and open, and as they should be. And probably learned about themselves as men, and isn’t that wonderful." |
